Newly created part-time role to join leading Research Institute. They now need someone to operate at a senior, strategic level to guide and advise their Board (all the day to day admin associated with the Secretariat is handled elsewhere within the Executive team.) This role will probably work out at about 1 day per week in terms of time commitment (but the exact hours and pattern can be very flexible) and will report to the Chair and work alongside the Executive team.



Role of the Board Counsel



We are seeking an individual with substantial experience of running or managing boards and good knowledge of the private sector to provide senior level advice and guidance to the Board chair and to manage the board’s activities. This is not a secretariat or administrative role, and secretariat support will be provided to the Board by the  HQ team.

Key duties




  • Directly advise, guide and support the Board Chair including making recommendations regarding future direction and Board priorities, governance, stakeholder and partner relations, macro finances, strategy, risks and appropriate mitigation.

  • Work with the Chair to shape the Board agenda, and prepare, attend and participate in the Board’s quarterly meetings.

  • Liaise with heads of the Board’s sub-committees to direct their activity and integrate sub-committee activities and outcomes with the activities of the Board and the organisation.

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the activities of the organisation and act as an effective liaison between staff and the Board of Trustees.

  • Liaise with secretariat support provided by the HQ team to schedule Board meetings, and prepare and circulate agendas, minutes and supporting documentation.

  • Critically assess the organisations activities and the support provided by the HQ team, providing constructive feedback and challenge.
